The Bernina railway - A journey through the season
St Moritz and Tirano mark the beginning and the end of the dream run: The world famous Bernina Railway in the Swiss canton of Graubuenden.

The meter gauge track laid between 1906 und 1910 as the ultimate example of the skill of Swiss Railway engineers is the only track to run open across the Alpes.
Alongside, nature, provides contrasts of unrivalled beauty. From St. Moritz, lying at the height of 6,000 feet, the track runs past the Bernina ice giants and up to the pass 7,400 feet above sea level where winter reigns for eight months of the year.

From there the Bernina Railway embarks on a truly breathtaking decent down to Veltlin in Italy. On it's way it drops 6,000 feet along a distance of just 24 miles - a feat accomplished purely by adhesion. It's sure not only to delight railway enthusiasts but which will also be relished by lovers of the magnificent mountain scenery, which the Bernina Railway traverses - time and time again.
