Wildlife in Mexico 1 - Deserts and Swamps
Although Mexico City, the world's largest city, is almost suffocating in smog, starting only 60 kilometres beyond the smog wall of the metropolis is a magniflcent volcanic landscape, with some peaks, such as Popocatepetl, over 5000 metres above sea level.

North of this Neo-Volcanica Cordillera are extensive areas of desert such as the Chihuahuan Desert and the Sonoran Desert.

Typical inhabitants of these rocky and sandy deserts, where cacti abound, are lizards and snakes, both harmless and venomous, desert beetles, quails and falcons. In the west of Mexico's central plateau, in Michoacan, Monarch butterflies in their millions winter in a high-lying valley more than 3.000 metres above sea level.

Streching along the Gulf of Mexico are swamp regions, as yet still intact, which contain a huge variety of bird llfe.
